So, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect camel wool coat for a while now. You know, something classic, timeless, and that can keep you warm and cozy in winter. Something that’ll make me look like a million bucks without actually costing that much. I finally decided to take the plunge and make one myself.
First things first, I needed to figure out what style I wanted. I spent hours scrolling through pictures online, checking out different designs. Did I want a wrap style? Maybe a double-breasted one? Or just a simple, long, straight cut? It was tough! After seeing tons of them, I did see some cool ones I like, such as Re-Edition wool coat, Wool Coat with Bow Details, and Belted Plush Sheep Shearling Coat. But they all came with a hefty price tag. I mean they were all Dior, and yeah, it’s Dior!
Eventually, I settled on a classic, single-breasted style with a notched collar. Simple, elegant, and something I knew I could pull off.
Next up, finding the right fabric. I knew I wanted wool because, well, it’s a wool coat, and wool is warm and durable. But there are so many types of wool! I hit up a few fabric stores, feeling all the different swatches. Some were too scratchy, others were too thin. It was like Goldilocks but with wool.
Finally, I found it – a beautiful, soft, camel-colored wool. It wasn’t cheap, but I figured it was an investment. After all, I was making a coat that I planned to wear for years. So I purchased enough wool fabric for my coat.
Then came the scary part – cutting the fabric. I laid out the pattern pieces, carefully pinned them to the wool, and took a deep breath. With my trusty fabric scissors, I started cutting. It was slow going, but I wanted to make sure every cut was precise. One wrong snip, and I could ruin the whole thing.
After what felt like forever, all the pieces were cut. Now for the sewing. I dusted off my old sewing machine, threaded it up, and got to work. I started with the lining, sewing the pieces together to create the inside of the coat. Then, I tackled the outer shell, carefully stitching the wool pieces together.
There were a few hiccups along the way. My machine jammed a couple of times, and I had to rip out some seams and redo them. But I kept at it, fueled by coffee and determination.
The most challenging part was definitely the collar and the lapels. Getting them to lay flat and look sharp took some serious patience and a lot of pressing with the iron. I also had to hand-sew some parts, like the buttons and the buttonholes. My fingers were sore, but it was worth it.
Finally, after many late nights and a few minor meltdowns, it was done. My very own, handmade, long camel wool coat. I tried it on, and it fit like a glove. I couldn’t stop twirling around in front of the mirror. It was exactly what I had envisioned.
