Okay, so, I wanted to try my hand at writing one of those “harem” stories. You know, the kind where one guy ends up with a bunch of girls all vying for his attention. Sounds fun, right? Well, it’s a bit more tricky than it looks.
First, I started with brainstorming. I just let my mind wander, jotting down any crazy idea that popped into my head. I even looked at some harem stories I’d read before to get some inspiration. After the idea soup settled, I moved onto the foundation.
The main thing I figured out early is you gotta make the main dude likable. I mean, who wants to read about a jerk surrounded by a bunch of awesome women? So, I spent some time thinking about this guy. What’s he like? What makes him tick? Why would all these girls even be interested in him? I tried to make him a regular guy, someone you might know in real life. Not some perfect superhero, but a decent person with his own quirks and maybe some hidden talents.
Then came the hard part – the ladies. I realized each one needed to be her own person. They couldn’t just be pretty faces. I crafted each love interest, making sure they were different. I gave them each their own personalities, their own backstories, their own reasons for falling for the main guy. I didn’t want them to be, like, clones of each other. One might be shy, another super outgoing, maybe one’s a bit of a rebel. You get the idea.
Then, I dove into writing. I tried to make sure it was reasonable why the characters did what they did. This was the most tricky part.
- Why were they even in this situation?
- Why do they love the main character?
- And most importantly, how does he handle it all?
So I set about writing their interactions, the little moments, the misunderstandings, the romantic stuff, all of it. It wasn’t easy, to be honest. Keeping all those personalities straight, making sure everyone got enough “screen time”, and keeping the whole thing from turning into a total mess was a real challenge. After finishing the first draft, I had to revise it again and again, tweaking things, changing scenes, trying to make it all flow smoothly.
I finally finished it. Getting all those characters to fall for the same guy in a way that didn’t feel totally forced was tough. I learned that writing a harem story is more than just throwing a bunch of characters together. It’s about creating a believable world, with believable people who have real feelings, even if the situation is a bit out there. It took a lot of time, a lot of rewriting, and a whole lot of imagination.
I’m not sure if I nailed it, but it was definitely an interesting experience. If you are going to write this, you have to take time to think about the meaning of it. Harem is getting bad now because of bad writing. I hope mine is not one of them.
Now that I’ve done it once, maybe I’ll try again sometime. But next time, maybe I’ll make it even more complicated. Perhaps a reverse harem story, with a girl and a bunch of guys. There are so many arts of war, the most important is to escape. Or maybe I’ll just stick to writing about talking animals. That’s always fun. Who knows?
