Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to write a “thinking of you” poem for my girlfriend for a while now. I’m not much of a poet, but I really wanted to give it a shot and make it extra special for her. I figured, why not document the whole process? Maybe it’ll inspire someone else, or at least give a few laughs at my attempts.
First off, I started by just brainstorming. I grabbed a notebook and just started jotting down words that came to mind when I think of her. Stuff like “sunshine,” “laughter,” “eyes,” you know, the usual cheesy stuff. I also wrote down some inside jokes and memories we share. It was a total mess, honestly, but it was a start!
Next, I tried to make sense of that mess. I started grouping words that felt like they belonged together, trying to find some sort of rhythm or flow. I read a few “thinking of you” poems online to get an idea of the structure. They were all so beautiful and, I’m not gonna lie, a little intimidating.
- “It’s that look in your eye.”
- “It’s the smile on your face.”
- “That makes time slip by.”
I spent a couple of days just messing around with different lines, trying to make them rhyme or at least sound good together. It was tough! I’d write something, think it was brilliant, then read it out loud and cringe. Back to the drawing board, many times.
Then, I decided to focus on a specific memory, a recent trip we took to the beach. The way she looked in the sunset, the sound of her laughter mixing with the waves – that’s where I found my inspiration. I started writing lines specifically about that day, how it felt, and how much it meant to me. And her beautiful eyes. I have to say something about her beautiful eyes!
After a lot of revising, rewriting, and reading out loud to my cat (who, by the way, was not impressed), I finally had something I was kind of happy with. It wasn’t perfect, and it definitely wasn’t Shakespeare, but it was from the heart, and that’s what mattered.
Finally, I wrote the poem on a nice piece of paper, put it in an envelope with a little drawing I made (I’m also not an artist, but hey, it’s the thought that counts, right?), and I gave it to her. She loved it! She actually teared up a little, which made all the struggle worth it. She said she’d cherish it, and the little things that she is doing are letting me know that she does.
So, that’s my “thinking of you” poem adventure. It wasn’t easy, but it was definitely a rewarding experience. And who knows, maybe I’ll try writing another one someday. Maybe one about my cat.
