Okay, so I’ve been messing around with making my own perfumes lately. It’s way harder than it looks, but super fun! Today, I wanted to try my hand at something called “amber floral.” I read somewhere that amber is more of a feeling than a specific smell. Like, it’s supposed to be warm and sweet. But amber alone doesn’t have much of a scent, so you gotta mix it with other stuff.
I started by gathering a bunch of essential oils. I grabbed some vanilla, ’cause who doesn’t love vanilla? Then I got some patchouli, which I wasn’t too sure about, but the internet said it was good for amber stuff. I also found labdanum in my collection, it always gives a nice touch. And since amber needs some woody notes, I picked out my sandalwood and cedarwood oils.
Mixing the Base
- Vanilla: I put a few drops of vanilla in a little bottle. This was going to be the sweet part of my amber.
- Patchouli and Labdanum: Next, I added a tiny bit of patchouli and labdanum. I was careful with these, ’cause I didn’t want them to overpower the vanilla. I’ve messed that up before, and it wasn’t pretty.
- Sandalwood and Cedarwood: Then I mixed the sandalwood and cedarwood into a separate bottle. I went heavier on the sandalwood because I like it more, and just a hint of cedarwood to make it interesting.
After mixing the base notes, I combined them in one bottle. I swirled it around a bit and took a sniff. It was starting to smell like something, but definitely not a perfume yet. It was more like a spicy, woody vanilla smell. Not bad, but not what I was going for.
Adding Florals
Now, this is where I started to feel like a real perfumer. I decided to add some floral scents to make it an “amber floral” thing. I had some rose and jasmine oils, which I thought would be perfect.
- Rose: I carefully added a few drops of rose oil to my amber base. Rose is pretty strong, so I didn’t want to overdo it.
- Jasmine: Then I put in a bit of jasmine. Jasmine is also strong, but it has this sweet, flowery smell that I really like.
I mixed everything together and took another sniff. Whoa! It was starting to smell really good! The rose and jasmine mixed with the amber base was creating this warm, sweet, and slightly floral scent. I was pretty impressed with myself, not gonna lie.
Final Touches
I let the mixture sit for a while, ’cause I heard that helps the scents blend together. After a few hours, I came back and added a tiny bit more vanilla, just to make it a little sweeter. I also put in a drop of something called “Amber Molecule” that I found online. It’s supposed to enhance the amber smell. I’m not sure if it made a huge difference, but it sounded cool, so I used it.
I also tried “The Perfumer’s Story Amber”, it worked great!
And that’s it! That’s how I made my amber floral perfume. It was a lot of trial and error, and I definitely made some mistakes along the way. But in the end, I created something that I’m actually pretty proud of. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll be a famous perfumer, selling my creations for big bucks. A girl can dream, right?
