Hey everyone, I’ve been getting into sewing lately, and I wanted to share my latest project. It’s a dress – the Alexis Braxton dress, to be exact. I saw it online and just fell in love with the design. So, I decided to give it a shot and make one myself.
First things first, I gathered all my materials. I went with this bright yellow fabric that’s mostly cotton with a little bit of elastane, should be comfortable to wear. I also made sure to have a lining, a hidden zipper for the back, and some thread that matched the fabric.
Getting Started
- Laid Out the Fabric: I started by spreading out the fabric on my big table. It’s a poplin fabric, so it’s got a nice crisp feel to it.
- Cut the Pieces: I used some patterns and carefully cut out all the pieces for the dress. I made sure to follow the lines, I didn’t want to mess this up.
- Sewed the Main Parts: I began sewing the main parts of the dress together. I was extra careful with the darts on the bust, because I wanted them to look neat.
- Added the Lining: Next up, I attached the lining. It felt good to see it start to look like an actual dress.
Working on the Details
- Shoulder Straps: The dress has these cute ruched shoulder straps. I had to gather the fabric to get that scrunched look. It was a little tricky, but it turned out pretty good.
- Zipper Time: I think the most challenging part was inserting the hidden zipper at the back. I really took my time with it. But hey, it actually worked out!
- Hemming: Finally, I hemmed the bottom of the dress. I wanted it to be just the right length – mini, but not too short.
After all that, I tried it on, and I was so happy with the fit! It’s a slim fit, but it feels great. The square neckline looks sharp, and the sleeves are just adorable. It’s exactly how I imagined it.
I’ve worn it out a couple of times now, and it’s perfect for the summer. The lightweight fabric makes it so breezy. I even got a few compliments on it, which was a nice bonus. I’m really proud of how it turned out. It’s not perfect, but for a homemade dress, it’s pretty darn good. I’m definitely going to be making more clothes. It’s so satisfying to wear something you’ve made yourself! If anyone else is thinking about trying to sew their own clothes, I’d say go for it! It’s a lot of fun, and you get to have unique pieces that no one else has.
