Well, let me tell ya ’bout this A Court of Thorns and Roses series, you know, the one them young folks been yappin’ about. Folks call it a good read, some even say it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Now, I ain’t no scholar, but I read it, and I got things to say, y’hear?
First off, it’s a fantasy thing, with magic and fairies and such. Reminds me a bit of them old fairy tales my grandma used to tell, but with more… well, you know… ahem… romance. Lots of it. The kind that makes your cheeks flush, if you catch my drift. They call it “mate trope” in the books. Basically, the men get all googly-eyed and can’t think straight once they find their “mate.” Kinda like how old Jed Clampett acted when he saw Granny’s apple pie, but way more… intense.
Now, some folks find that romantic, I guess. But to me, it seems a bit much. Like them men ain’t got no minds of their own. Just obsessed. And the way them Illyrian fellas treat their women? Don’t even get me started! Treatin’ ’em like dirt if they step outta line. Rape and isolatin’ them… it ain’t right, I tell ya. Makes my blood boil just thinkin’ ’bout it.
- The Good Stuff: It’s easy to read, even for an old gal like me. The characters are fun, the world is interesting, and the story keeps you guessin’. Lots of magic and excitement, that’s for sure. Keeps you entertained, like a good soap opera, but with more… wings and glowy things. And, like I said, plenty of that ahem… romance stuff, if you’re into that.
- The Not-So-Good Stuff: That “mate” thing, like I said. And the way them Illyrian men act. Plus, some parts are kinda… steamy. Not somethin’ you’d wanna read aloud at Sunday school, that’s for sure. And the main gal, Feyre, her moods change faster than the weather in spring. One minute she’s happy, the next she’s mad as a hornet, for no good reason. Confusin’, I tell ya.
- The Spicy Bits: Well, let’s just say there’s some kissin’ and… other stuff. One scene, in particular, is pretty… detailed. Let’s just leave it at that. You get the picture. Not for the faint of heart, or for young’uns, that’s for sure. Makes my old heart flutter, and not in a good way sometimes.
Now, I heard the writer lady wrote this book in just five weeks. Five weeks! That explains a few things, I reckon. Like why things jump around so much and why some parts feel a bit… rushed. But hey, she got it done, and people seem to like it, so who am I to judge?
They say it’s dramatic and magical and all that. And yeah, I guess it is. It’s got them fantastical things that take you away to another place, and it’s got that lovey-dovey stuff that keeps you hooked. It’s like eatin’ a whole box of chocolates. Sweet and satisfying at first, but then you might feel a little sick afterward.
Overall, is it worth readin’? Well, that depends on what you’re lookin’ for. If you want a quick and easy fantasy story with some romance and excitement, then yeah, go for it. But if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ deep and meaningful, or somethin’ without all that… ahem… steamy stuff, then maybe look elsewhere. Me? I enjoyed it well enough, even if it did make me blush a few times. But I ain’t gonna lie, I’ve read better. But it did keep me company on them long winter nights, better than staring at the cracks in the wall, I suppose.
So, there you have it. My two cents on this A Court of Thorns and Roses thing. Take it or leave it. I’m just an old woman, what do I know? But I know what I like, and I know what makes me uncomfortable. And this book, well, it’s a bit of both. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about romance and fairies has made me hungry.
