Alright, so you wanna learn some hip hop, huh? Down in Birmingham, Alabama, no less? Well, let me tell ya, age ain’t nothin’ but a number. Don’t you go thinkin’ you’re too old for this stuff. I seen folks older than dirt shakin’ their booties better than them young whippersnappers. You wanna dance, you dance. That’s all there is to it.
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I hear tell there’s plenty of places in Birmingham where you can get your groove on. They got all sorts of classes, for all sorts of folks. Little kids, big kids, even creaky old folks like me, if I was so inclined. But I ain’t, I’m just tellin’ ya what I heard.
Heard there’s this place called Jackie O’Neal School of Dance. Sounds fancy, don’t it? And Linda Dobbins Dance, too. Then there’s NS Dance Studio, Railroad Park – seems like everybody and their dog is teachin’ hip hop these days. And that Hoover Family somethin’-somethin’ too. Too many to keep track of, if you ask me.

Now, don’t go gettin’ your britches in a twist about how long it’s gonna take to learn. Everybody’s different, see? Some folks pick it up quick, some folks take a little longer. It ain’t a race, it’s about havin’ fun. You just gotta keep at it, keep practicin’. And don’t you worry if you stumble and fall, everybody does. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep on dancin’. That’s what my mama always used to say. Well, not about dancin’ exactly, but you get the idea.
Some of these dance places, they ain’t just for hip hop, mind you. They got ballet, tap, jazz, all that fancy stuff. Even that point-y toe dancin’ – “pointy” I think they call it. And some places, they even teach them little acrobatic flips and tricks. But if it’s hip hop you want, then hip hop you shall get. Just gotta find the right class, the right teacher.
And listen here, don’t you be shy neither. Everybody starts somewhere. Even them fancy dancers on TV, they all had to start at the beginning. So don’t you go thinkin’ you’re not good enough. You are good enough. You just gotta believe in yourself and have some fun. That’s the most important thing.
I heard tell there’s even a dance place down in Mobile for folks with special needs. Called Dance Without Limits, I think. Ain’t that somethin’? Shows you, dancin’ is for everybody. It don’t matter who you are or where you come from, dancin’ can bring you joy. It can make you feel good, make you feel alive.
Now, I can’t tell you exactly which place is the best, ’cause like I said, I ain’t no dancer. But I reckon you can go check ’em out for yourself. Go watch a class, talk to the teachers, see if it feels right. And don’t be afraid to try a few different places before you settle on one. It’s like findin’ the right pair of shoes, gotta try ‘em on first to see if they fit.
And remember, it ain’t just about learnin’ the steps, it’s about findin’ your own style, your own groove. It’s about lettin’ loose and havin’ a good time. So go on, get out there and dance! Shake your groove thang! And don’t let nobody tell you you can’t. You hear me?
One more thing, I saw somethin’ about a flA.S.H. Movementz Dance Studio on Lorna Road. Said somethin’ about November 25, 2024. Don’t know what that means, maybe a special class or somethin’. You might wanna check that out too. Alright, I’m done talkin’ now. Go on, get dancin’!
